Michael Charles Brown is a composer, producer and songwriter, based in Los Angeles.
Michael has been creating music since the moment he pressed “record” on a Tascam 4-track cassette deck as a kid. Cutting his teeth in Bay Area bands as a teenager, Michael combined a DIY ethos with formal studies in classical music theory at San Francisco State University.
In the late-night haze of San Francisco’s underground scene, Michael became a fixture at Eyephunk, an influential record label nestled in the Lower Haight and spearheaded by Adam Ohana and Anna Sitko. It was here he honed his ambient downtempo style, performing atmospheric guitar and synth sets in Thump Radio’s legendary Blue Room sessions.
A true multidisciplinary artist, Michael co-founded a Mission District art collective, designing soundscapes for avant-garde installations and electrifying event spaces with immersive audio-visual performances. Alongside these creative ventures, he performed at iconic San Francisco venues like Slim’s and The Independent while working as a live sound engineer, bringing his expertise to touring acts in the city’s most beloved clubs.
Michael’s studio career took off with collaborations alongside the Rondo Brothers, time spent at Opus Recording Studio in Berkeley, and a pivotal stint at ProTools at the world-renowned Fantasy Studios. At Opus, he mastered Pro Tools, engineering sessions for bands, producing scores for short films, and crafting commercial projects. Always one for analog warmth, Michael recorded and produced a full-length vinyl record entirely on tape – an homage to his cassette-deck roots and a testament to his commitment to capturing music’s tactile essence.
Currently, Michael is venturing into new creative territory, scoring his first feature film. His work continues to weave past and present, analog and digital, personal and universal – a sonic narrative shaped by decades of experimentation, collaboration, and an insatiable love of sound.
